Mosquito's /Blackfly in BC/Alberta Aug/Sep
We'll be traveling in Western Canada in Aug/Sep and wanted to know if mosquito's and blackfly were a particular concern in the times and areas we'd be travelling in, since we'd like to do camping and light hiking/canoeing and also have a small baby with us ...Aug 2nd week - Kootenay's (Nelson, Kaslo, Nakusp)
Aug 3rd week - Banff, Icefields, Jasper
Aug last week - Prince Rupert area
Sep 1st week - Vancouver Island (Tofino area)
We have gotten spoiled in living in the San Francisco bay area that we have few biting insects year around, so would appreciate knowing how prepared we should be ...

I can't speak for those specific areas, but in my part of Alberta mosquitos are not a big problem this year. That is not to say there are none, but certainly a lot less than last year, which was exceptionally bad. Bug protection is always a must, especially for the little one.2
My area of Alberta (Jasper) is having the worst mosquito season I think I have ever seen in thirty years of living here. I know from friends in Banff and Lake Louise that the same thing is happening there. We had huge amounts of snow last winter, which has been slow to melt due to a cool spring (there is still a lot more snow than usual up on the peaks) and then we had almost triple the usual amount of rain through June compared to normal. Now we've had a lovely heat wave (27 - 30C every day for two weeks), which is nice except that you can't do anything outside without coating yourself with liberal amounts of DEET, frequently.BUT... I am SO looking foward to later in August and then into September, because the bugs always die off by then. I don't know if it's the usual drier conditions (no guarantees there) or the cooler nights, but bugs are never a problem here when you are planning to come.

That's generally true. Mosquitoes in the south of Alberta (including Banff) are usually here and gone in a couple of weeks in early summer. But spring in the alpine is something that comes later the higher your altitude. So their two week stint could happen anytime until the snow returns if you plan to get up high in the mountains. From about Edmonton and north, it's always chow season for the bugs until the water is frozen.
Overall, you should have no concerns in September.
