Vatican vs Other tours

Hi everyone,

We'll be in Rome late August 2012. Looking at tours, I'm wondering if there is any real difference between the guided tours provided by the Vatican (e.g. this one via vatican.va ) and those provided by others like My Vatican Tour ?

Any thoughts or insights would be much appreciated.

Grazie.
Af.

My suggestion: buy a good guidebook and do it on your own, and with tickets booked online in advance you skip the main queue.

But if I'd have to choose between the 2 alternatives you posted, I'd definitely go with the official one from the Vatican website, it's way much cheaper and you can have different itineraries. Myvaticantours gives you a group guided tour of just 3 hours of the Vatican museums, and 89 € seems way too much.

but again, there are many good guidebooks about the museums, buy one and explore indipendently, so that you can decide how much time to spend on the things you like more. At least, that's what I do when I visit museums!

Thanks for the tips. That's given me a bit to think about.

Leaning towards going with the Vatican group tour. I like the idea of a tour guide - it keeps my wife from having to look at and read the plaque of every single item which will take us years! Also, we'll be returning to Rome in a few months again so there's always the option to go it independently if we want a deeper look then.

Thanks!
