Visiting mid August.Interested in theatre, music, and history.Prefer outdoors, small town to city. Not interested in Casinos. We are young at heart late 50 's ladies.

Not much in the way of theatre and music in those parts. Visit Bodie Ghost Town for history. Other than that... I can't be of much help to you. Lots of great hiking around there but that doesn't seem to interest you.

A day in Truckee?

Sacramento? Though it will be about 100 degrees in August.

The Gold Country? Auburn?

Virginia City is a photogenic old mining town with plenty of history. Nearby Carson City is the Nevada capital, but still a small town feel, yet with museums, etc

Yes, Reno is known for the casino's, but it also has everything you are looking for, with both vegas style shows in the casinos, as well as good independent theatre (check out the Bruka theatre) as well as concerts and musical events both big and small, indoors and outdoors and even some free shows. The Hot August Nights car show/parade is also the 2nd week of August. If you will be there around that time then reserve a room now as the area books up (even in Tahoe where you want to go).

Grass Valley and Nevada city are also great old upscale historical mining towns.

Mammoth Lakes, just north of Bishop is a resort town where maybe you can pamper yourself with a spa package before picking up the hubby's

I also second the suggestion to visit Bodie

Getting accommodations could be tight but perhaps north on Highway 49 through Gold Rush towns, then cross the Sierra on Highway 50 or 88 and 89, then south on 395 to Bishop.
