Suggested Needed for Intinerary Ethiopia

I am planning to travel with Elder/Trek Travel Agency in Toronto, Canada. Does anyone have any experience with this agency?

Here is my itinerary from Sept 7-Oct 9:

1. I am 72 years old mature female and rather fit. The itinerary:
Spend two days in Addis;
Fly to Bahir Dar and the Blue Nile
to Gondary;Timket and Gondar Sightseeing
to Simien, Simien Mountains, Simien Mountains to Axum
Axum City Sights
Fly to Lalibela and the Northern Churches, Lalibela
Fly to Addis
Fly to Mesket
Lake Langano, Arba Minch,Lake Chamo
Arba Minch to Jinka, Mursi Tribe,
Turmi, Murele, Omo Bend and Karo People
Arba Minch via Konso, Arbore Tribe
Awasa, Shenkele Game Reserve, Aregash Lodge
back to Addis.
Total: 23 days
There are 3 internal flights: Axum to Lalibela, Lalibela to Addis, Addis to Bahir Dar. There will be no extensive hiking throughout this trip.

What will the weather be in these areas? Will it be very hot? Rainy?

Is this itinerary too ambitious?

3. I have a chose between Emirates Air or Ethiopian air from Washington, D.C. Dulles. Which would you choose?

4. Any need for malaria pills in the Omo Valley?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.....Mary

You might try cross-posting this on the Older Travellers branch. Some of the regulars there may well have experience with Elder Treks.

Hello Mary,

Twenty three days is a rushed trip for sure covering everything in Ethiopia.
Normally a minimum of three weeks is enough to see the northern circuit by public transport but you save a few days with those internal flights.

For mine..... Cut something out!!!!!

You say your itinery is 23 days yet it spans a full month by the calendar so is this correct?

Emerities is THE best airline in the world but by booking with Ethioian you save significant costs on internal flights with Ethiopian air. This may or may not be a drama for you though as you are traveling in a non backpacking style.

I think in the north the rainy season will have passed by.
Ethiopia is mostly above 1800 metres which means not too many mozzies EXCEPT the south which is lower and a Malaria area. It only takes one Mosquito to give you malaria so its an easy choice IMO. Take something.

The days in the north at this time will be warmer but its still at altitude so the nights are beautiful and pleasant.

Drink bottled water if you are coming straight from Canada as your stomach will need to adjust to the different food and its ingredients.
Great place to buy those Ethiopian silver crosses is in Axum.
Bahir Dar is a great relaxing place and a pity you haven't the time for the twice weekly ferry to and from Gorgora/ Bahir Dar. Its a classic!

IMO you have to cut something out as you will be rushed of your feet and knackered at the end of each day. Daunting itinery even for a younger person.

Cheers.

Have a great trip.

1. As Simsy says - your dates indicate 32 days in Ethiopia...not 23....................which is correct.
2. You say fly to Mesket - no such place ? Elsewhere you list 3 internal flights with no mention of Mesket ??

3. Simsy is out of date on the business of discounts on domestic flights. doesnt matter which airline you fly in with. What you need to ask the toiur company is are they using the right process to get the lower prices now available to everyone......

4. Re your age. Most tourists here who use a tour company are over 50............................ those under 35 tyen d to do the northern trip independently

6. Weather will be everything. Hot and dryin Omo lowlands, verery wet in Addis - very, cold at night in some places.

7. Buses and domestic flights will not be affectedx by the weather.

8. MANY MANY people do both north and south in 23 days, but it will be tiring,.

Please look at this thread: http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=2222993 . You simply had a spelling error and misunderstanding about a place/event.
