Tipping in Vietnam

Been writing a lot of threads lately it seems,

Have been in Vietnam for two days and am wondering what the custom was in regards to tipping?

the people here are really beautiful and helpful - i don't want to tip them too little. Just wondering what any of you would recommend?

Tipping is not required in Vietnam.

Tipping is not required, but if you do, then maybe do it discretly as some managers of cafes andrestaurants will try and take part of the tip.

#3 - correct. When my wife worked as a waitress, the staff waited until the very stingy boss went away, cracked open the piggy bank holding the tips and shared them. Although tipping is optional in Vietnam, waiting staff are underpaid and will appreciate your generosity and thoughtfulness.

Let's keep in mind that tipping is a purely American sport. Just another thing we've exported to the rest of the world and forced other countries into. That said, the average salary for a Viet is $150 a month. So, you can choose to tip based on those facts.

I was in a restaurant in Ha Noi last year which was patronized by foreigners. I asked the waitress, after seeing a foreigner tip her with a dollar bill, if Viets tip. She told me no - only foreigners do.

Also, many establishments in Vietnam that add a service charge to your bill don't pay all of it, and sometimes none of it, to their staff. This includes 5 star, Western managed hotels

Tipping a small part has been a tradition in Thailand by Pu Yais dating from before the yanks arrived in force. British diplomats with Bowring mention it (see Bowring Treaty).

Deal with it, then dummy up.

I don't understand the last statement, but if I'm wrong, I stand corrected and apologize.

Actually TraveL that is incorrect, I drink with locals at beer bars and most of them give a tip, some very nice tips.

Always tip (unless service is appalling). It's greatly appreciated by those on generally low wages.10-15% is what I go with

Alenathai,
1 or 2 usd for waiters and porters is too much for the vietnamese standart .It surely depends on what hotel you areI in I guess.I .only tip 10k vnd/porter=0,5 usd in a 3 star hotel.Nothing for waiters unless he or she is very nice.I once gave 14k to a waitress at a beer food stall, believe me she was very happy!

Sorry, I should of been a bit clearer in my original post re: when I wrote 'the custom'

I'm not an American, and I gathered that tipping wasn't a requirement here, but as a couple of posters stated above, the wages here are quite low. I always tip, I was just seeking some advice from people on an idea of how much - as I don't want to tip too little.
