I see you're new here, so I guess that explains you're not having read other recent threads. Scroll down about a dozen threads and you will find a report from someone who has just been to Cano Cristales-La Macarena. You may want to try a search for any other reports. Sometimes searches yield, sometimes not. If you do get some search hits check the dates of posting. Sounds like a pretty cool place you are going. Also, you can contact that report poster by private message, or maybe on the thread itself.

Buen viaje!

ColombianStan:

Cano cristales has been safe for over a year. The only way you can go is with an authorized guide and there are only two periods of the year that are worth going because that's when the river algae is in bloom. Unfortunately, I can't remember them off the top my head.

Additionally, how are you driving there? From my understanding the only way to arrive is via plane from Bogota or Villavicencio.

If you can square away the season and the guide, you'll have a great time! (I do have some information regarding a local provider in the area if you're interested)

Hope this helps!

Daniel

Conditions of the cano change year to year, depending on weather and other variables. They say the start of the season is June, so you should be ok. Professional guides, which you don't need, can be emailed about current conditions.

I was there a few years back and did a decent amount of research. I'm not sure that driving yourself to the Serrania Macarena is a realistic option. You may want to look into that carefully.

Best of luck.
