Camping on the Great Wall

A group of myself and about 5 or 6 other friends are going to be in Beijing from September 29th to October 3rd. We'd like to spend a night camping on the Great Wall while we're there.

Just wondering if you can just take/buy a tent and just plop down and camp, or do you have to get permits beforehand? Or do you even have to do it solely through one of the tour agencies (a little too expensive for all of us...)?

We're hoping we'd just be able to find a spot on the wall, or even just on the ground beside the wall as opposed to spending around $350 for a tour package.

Any help would be appreciated!
thanks

Why camping on the Great Wall? You can't see anything at night. You can live in the house of the local hotel or peasants if you visit some of the wild section of the Great Wall.

Camping on the Great Wall is a bit like going to Mt Everest base camp and sleeping in one of the tents--an experience. And a great one at that.

Camping on the great wall is possible but not everywhere. All the restored places like badalin, muntianyu, simatai, jinsanling do not allow people to camp overnight. In other places on the wild great wall local farmers might tell you to go down. Huanchuchang is a place where it is possible but you will also have to pay local farmers at the beginning and the end... The price you mention is way to high... there are other companies like dandelion hiking are offering camping trips for much cheaper....Some of the best places to camp are general xu great wall or crouching tiger great wall. Only from May till september camping on the wall is safe. Before and after these dates it is not advisable as everything becomes very dry and the danger of fire to big.

Camping is really not permitted without a permit obtained by tour operators; however it is a long wall and it is sometimes done. It can be very cold at night and I would rather stay at a small 2 star hotel located next to the Wall at Mutainyu section of the Wall. It is called Mutianyu Great Wall Hotel. Can try googling it but I do have a phone number (10) 6162-6395 for inquiries. A warm bed sure beats a cold ground....

Thanks for the help guys, it's all really appreciated. If we don't end up camping ON the wall or staying in a guesthouse/local house nearby, is it the same rules to just camp on the ground beside the wall?
