This Post should explain almost everything. It was posted for western Europe but applies equally well to Australia and Asia.My one caution is that in some Asian countries (as mentioned in the above link) local banks may levy a fee of around $5.00, which can add somewhat to your expenses if you are making relatively small withdrawals. In Australia banks are similarly avaricious, but the local fee is likely to be between $1.50 and $2.00 and you will be withdrawing larger amounts.

Depending where you go in Asia, you're going to need some US currency (visas, etc) so make sure any notes you get are in pristine condition.4
Vietnam you mean!! Thailand ATMs (except AEON) have an additional 150THB charge besides the one your bank has. Vietnam ATMs also attract a double whammy fee. Make sure if you're going to use ATMs in Laos that you have either a debit or credit card. And you're definitely going to need US currency for both Laos and Vietnam visas.
