Icelandic trek June 2013
Hi there,We are a group of university students who are planning to go over to Iceland next year. We would like to find a longer trekking route for early June which takes a few days to complete. Does anyone have any recommendations? We would have to go early/mid June due to university commitments. We had looked into the laugavegurinn hiking trail, but apparently this is not advised for June time.
Thanks!

This network of hiking routes in the Eastfjords might be attractive to you. It is generally suitable for a bit earlier in the season than the inland routes.http://nat.is/gonguleidireng/gonguleidir_viknaslodir_al.htm
Things vary from year to year, and probably this year you would have been fine on some of the internal routes rather earlier than is usual. But next year, who can say?

The Westfjords might also be interesting to you. Sorry no such excellent free information as above, but there is a series of trekking maps for sale. http://www.strandir.is/hikingmaps/Also check the dates of the hikers' ferries to Hornstrandir (far north of Westfjords), they are usually starting by mid-June. Maybe you could walk in from one of the road heads and then get a ferry out later.

Both Askja and Landmannalaugar are difficult to reach in early June..Are you taking your own tents, or do you intend to stay in huts?
Another interesting option is to go north. There is plenty to see around lake Myvatn, and there is a really good 2-day hike from Asbyrgi to Dettifoss (not too difficult, well signed trail), with the option to stay an extra day to explore the area around Hljodarklettar.
Myvatn/Krafla/Dettifoss/Asbyrgi offers a lot of variety on a small area: fresh smoking lava, awesome lava structures, geothermal areas, hotsprings, the most powerful waterfall, vulcanos, rhyolite mountains, canyons and a beautiful lake filled with birdlife. Also Husavik is near to spot some whales. And there are public transport options available.
