lots of the same questions!

I just scrolled through some recent posts and it looks like prices have gone up a lot since my last visit to SL. So I have a few familiar questions but they are a bit more specific than what I could find using the search option.

I spent 5 days in Hikkaduwa back in March 2010 (was living in Maldives at the time, so it was a short holiday). I stayed at the place next to Mambo's (right side if you're standing on beach with your back to the water). I don't remember the name but I remember the price was equivalent to $10 usd and this was during the Japanese surf competition as well. I've been tentatively planning an extended surf trip to SL for November or December this year and might need to adjust my plans depending on price changes. I was originally budgeting 50-60 usd a day for a room, food (local/cheap), transport to other surf breaks around Galle/Matara (not every day though), and maybe a few beers. I absolutely can't afford more than $60 a day so I might need to choose a different country depending on how much the prices have gone up in the last two years.

Are there any places left in the Hikkaduwa to Matara and in between area that still offer basic but clean rooms for about $20 a night? The other side of the highway is fine as long as it's a short walk (5-10 minutes) to a good surf break. I would prefer a quiet room anyway since I know the music from bars can get loud. I'm also aware that the Christmas time gets busy as well. Would I be able to grab a good room and hold onto it if I arrived in the second week of December and stayed through the holiday? Or do even the dumps charge triple rates during that time?

I don't have to stay in Hikkaduwa, anywhere in southwest SL is fine. But I do need to be near surf or be a short tuk tuk ride away so that the transport cost stays within my budget. So...... am I asking too much? Should I look at other destinations or can I fit all my requirements into my small budget?

Thanks for any help you can offer! I didn't realize prices had changed so much and everyone knows the LP guides never quote realistic room rates even in the most up to date books.

p.s. I'm a single female traveler so won't be able to share costs to save money and halfway secure accommodation is a real plus.

Still you can find some accommodations within your budget (15-20$) with family houses at Hikkaduwa.
But that’s not on the beach these houses are available at every cross roads to the land side. Start from bank of Ceylon. Cross lane.
Last week of last year December you couldn’t find any single room on the beach at Hikka all are fully pack.

Hi. You should be fine on less than $60 a day. November will be cheaper than December and less busy, ie not to many at the surf breaks in Hikka. Last year was crazy with sometime 30 to 40 surfer at main point. Fortunately a lot of them said they won’t come back as it is too busy. Food wise if you eat at the local places you will be fine, you can still get a rice and curry for 300 rupees in Hikkaduwa, just don’t go to the guest house restaurants. For cheaper, secure accommodation try the guest houses around Surfing Beach – there are a few on this stretch (which is just in front of the main break) which tend to be cheaper, also if you stay for a month you can probably get a better deal.
