Mae Sot Border 'FROM BURMA' to Thailand overland/bicycle

My friend and I are currently doing a cycle challenge form Jersey CI to Asia (Thailand).

We are currently in Turkey about to hit the middle east and onto India, from here our plan was to fly to Yangoon (Burma) and cross the 'friendship bridge' at Mae Sot near Mywaddy into Thailand...

HOWEVER we have recently receieved an email from the Burmese Embassy stating that we can only enter and exit the country via the airport with a tourist visa.

Our plan is to use the aiport to gain access to the country then try and cross the friendship bridge into Thailand however we arent really keen on being shot or arrested for trying to do the unthinkable and then being turned away only to have to spend more on flights and rethinking the whole 'how to get to thailand' plan.

You would think that with travellers coming from Thailand and going back that they would lket us through, but to make such asssumptions would be just silly :-)

Any thoughts, ideas and experiences could be of great help

Burmese (Myanmar) people are allowed to do it, that is, travel from Yangon to Myawaddy via Hpa-An and Kawkareik and from Myawaddy, cross in to Thailand at Mae Sot. Unfortunately, foreigners aren't allowed to do so.

So my only suggestion is for you and your friend to come back to Myanmar in the next life as Burmese citizens. Sorry, but that's the only realistic possibility in this point in time.

can't do it now. perhaps in a few years.

but it is now again possible to cross from muse into china (according to
a recent report on this here forum). enter yunnan province, head south,
across northern laos, and into northern thailand.

you need guide and permits arranged through a travel agent. it will be
more expensive than flying, and more hassle, but apparently doable.

You will not be shot or arrested, you will just be told politely to go back the way you came.
To Yangon airport.

It's not possible. There is a very good website tools4fools which shows a map of Myanmar and the roads that are open and closed to foreigners. If you are in Mae Sot you can get day pass to Myawaddy, but what for.

Hello!
I have read that the border is open now and you can go from Burma to Thai.
Anyone can confirm it?
Thanks!

You can cross that border, but it is not open in the sense that people can freely cross and go onward into Burma. To go from Burma to Thailand via that border, you would need to fly from Yangon or Mandalay to Kentung, then have a pre-arranged driver/guide and permit to take you to the Thai border. Quite expensive as well as being a hassle.

Or if you're in the north already, you can fly Mandalay to Bangkok.
