Q1, The best places to visit is the things that intrest you,,, and do things you like to do...
Q2, The best places to dive is definetley in the sea. (That one was easy)...
Q3, Cheap places to stay are not 5* Hotels...
Q4, Best places for live music are where the bands/DJ's etc are playing...
Other useful information... Take a lot of money...

Where are you flying into, how long are you staying, and what accomodation do you have lined up, if any?

Incidentally, it's best to have an answer for that last question when you talk to immigration.

That's great thanks, how far is the guest house from the main bars and resturants?

It's far, in a suburb on the opposite side of the city from the "hip strip." (Main tourist/nightlife strip, very close to the airport.) Most people around here don't like Montego Bay very much, so the tendency is to stay there to get one's bearings after a flight in or to be near the airport before a flight out. Treasure Beach is a bit of a haul from Mo Bay, hence Mikey Mike's Mo Bay guesthouse suggestion.

There are other options closer to the action, but probably not the same value for your money. Personally, I prefer to stay at a very cheap place downtown, but downtown and very cheap places are not everyone's cup of tea.

That said, damion, can you suggest a really cheap place downtown in Mobay? Seems we haven't yet heard of one.

Sure:
Linkage Guesthouse on Church street, three blocks up from St James and next to the 7th Day Adventist Church (the church is visible on google maps). Route taxis from the airport terminate at Sam Sharpe Square, church street is two blocks from there. The driver can easily point you in the right direction. Linkage is actually listed in the LP guide.

I would unhesitatingly recommend Linkage to just about anyone with shallow pockets, a bit of third world (love-) hotel experience, and interest in experiencing a slice of downtown life.

Now, if only there were a similar recommendation for downtown Kingston....different beast, I know, but I'm dying to find something similar over there.

I have seen Linkage. It is a cheap hotel, but not very inviting, kind of like just some place to crash. Another thing is that you certaintly would not want to go out after dark in downtown MoBay. Actually I do not understand why anyone would want to stay in downtown MoBay. Most people will want to stay near the the beach around Glouster Ave.

Yes, MikeyMike, as I said initially, it is a very cheap guesthouse and not for everybody, just like downtown is not for everybody. I like the vibe downtown, but I do understand that I am a bit of a freak in that regard. For the record, though, I did find the staff and management there to be very friendly and welcoming, and enjoyed sitting on the second floor veranda and watching the street or chatting with the staff. It might be run-down, but it is also not the pill-box that some cheap hotels can be.

Personally, I do not feel unsafe downtown after dark. I wouldn't wander around in the middle of the night, but the streets are quite busy with people from all walks of life in the evening, with the added bonus that the sun has gone down and it's a bit cooler.

Anyway, I'm not trying to push the point, but the question was asked and I answered.

Irie Damion
I did not mean to imply that the staff was "unfriendly", actually I agree that the staff was welcoming when I visited there. When I said "not very inviting" I meant that rooms and decor are a bit dated and run down. Believe me I haved stayed at worst places in my travels. I was just trying to be realistic. I must admit that the second floor balcony was nice, but still I would not venture out at night, especially at the times most people are gone home for the evening.

Cool, seems like we've located the place on the map and painted a double-verified picture for those who might want that option.

A worthy enough reason to hijack a thread, I suppose ;)

I hope Amie is off on the south coast by now...
