Is Budva dreadful?

Half the comments I read about Budva suggest it is a charming mini-Dubrovnik, the other half that it is a Russian-dominated cross between Pattaya and Ibiza. Could you advise?

charming mini Dubrovnik would be Kotor. Budva for me sounds more like the second you wrote.

I would disagree slightly. Budva is really two parts. One is the charming old city and the other is everything outside of that, which during summer is overrun with Russians but in October was quite pleasant. Photos of Stary Budva

Thank you, Ruth/everbrite. In view of the comments I think I'll drop Budvar. Very helpful information.

Ruth, off topic, but it goes viral after dozens of repeats, there's no "y" in SerboCroatian Latin alphabet. If it's "him" and he's old, he is "stari", for 'her' - "stara", for 'it' - "staro".
For example, Old Budva would be Stara Budva, although the old town of Budva is officially called Stari Grad (Old Town).
Old Bar, as you frequently refer to it, would be Stari Bar.

cheers

I may be too late here but I think the OP has described it about right! There is the old section which is a very small Dubrovnik with some interesting buildings and a nice feel in the evening as people wander about for dinner or a drink or two.
Then there is the rest of the place which is very busy and full of cheap food and cheap drink places with a fair few package tourist type resorts in the area.

Yes it is awful. Until a few here ago it was a sleepy fishing village. Russians came and they started to buy land and build huge awful buildings. Even the old town lost its character: full of tacky shops and overpriced restaurant.

Having now been there briefly I can confirm it is pretty awful. Even the old town, which has been relatively spared, is not a patch on Kotor, or even Herzeg Novi, let along Dubrovnik.

Budva is one of the most sophisticated towns that I have seen. It is Montenegrin Miami indeed. It has endless rows of chic cocktail bars and sleekly contemporary nightclubs located around the marina and is increasingly popular. Their glamorous decor accords well with the seaside setting, beautiful Old Town of Venetian origin. It represents a treasure chest of culture heritage. In the Stari Grad (Old town) you can also visit many shops, cafés, restaurants and galleries. Monasteries Stanjevici, Podostrog, Rezevici and Gradiste are important historic and religious monuments of Budva. The Budva coast is 21 km long with 17 beaches. It is among the most beautiful coasts in the world. Anyone who dares to say 'dreadful' has not really experienced this town and therefore does not qualify for true and honest opinion.

"However, beyond the beaches, it's worth noting that Budva is also known as the 'Montenegrin Miami'. It has earned this title for its endless rows of chic cocktail bars and sleekly contemporary nightclubs located around the marina and increasingly popular with the super rich and A-listers alike. Their glamorous decor accords well with the seaside setting, where it's likely you'll look out of a terrace at the softly lit Budva Old Town with an iced drink in hand. Even if you don't feel like partying, the abundance of Italian-inspired restaurants will give your stomach just as much as your eyes to feast on. As part of our Jet2holidays Luxe Collection, you'll find that the clean contemporary lines and minimalist furnishings of the 4-star plus Avala Resort & Villas are the perfect fit for this sophisticated town.
