cheap accommodation for couples

Accommodation wise, a few questions.

We will be travelling as a couple and were just wondering, do hostels take this into consideration?

i.e
are we able to down the price of $ p/n by sharing one bed?
are private rooms cheaper for 2 at hostels?
what are other options for cheap accommodation?

Thanks guys.

Generaly 3 options
Share a dorm, cheapest but not private..
Double room, private but more expensive
Single room, some places allow 2 people to share single room.

Depends where.......some places will let 2 people share a single room for the regular price.Others will charge a bit more for 2 people in a single room.Others will refuse and say you must take a double.

Its always worth asking if you are short of cash........

I remember once when i was very short of money (in Hong Kong) I shared a dorm bunk bed for a week (with my girlfriend, not a stranger ;-)....and we only paid for one bunk. But not many places will let you do that........

If you go to SEAn countries like Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam , you wont find many hostels but guest houses abound and in Vietnam, hotels.

Two people must usually pay for two people unless you share a private single room (in Thailand especially) where two can fit in one bed, and then many Thais fit 3-4 in one bed. Most hostels charge per person. You use twice as much water so you should be prepared to pay for two, if necessary.

Ah dang. Are there any tell-tale signs of a more relaxed place that will let us both stay in the same single room, or is it the sort of thing you kind of have to just knock and ask?

I'd agree with above that it is more likely in small family guesthouses...rather than hostels or foreign-owned places where they are more likely to do it by the book.

Also of course...places that are not so popular (or full).

You can look at a double room and then ask if they have anything cheaper...if they say no,suggest sharing a single room and they may say yes!

Do what we do. Ask for a room with one big bed. They'll know what you mean.

I get the feeling that subtlety is the way to go here?
