Reliabilty of Butterworth- Bangkok train

How reliable is the train 36 Butterworth- Bangkok?

Its supposed to arrive in BKK at 10.30 in the morning. I have to be somewhere in BKK not too far from the train station at 12.30- ie 2 hrs later.

Can I be reasonably confident that the train wont be much more than one hour late into BKK?

My only train ride in Thailand so far was on the overnight from Chiang Mai and it was an hour late..........

biggest problem is the Thai / Malay border..
its not unusual to get stuck there for hours.

I would never count on SRT Thai trains being on time. Delayed by at least an hour or as much as 5 hours, based on personal experience.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! There's no way I'd make a BKK appointment before 15.00 if planning to arrive by long distance train, and especially that one.

If you were only an hour late from ChiangMai then you were lucky!

In Feb, we were almost 2 hrs late leaving Surat Thani but they must have gone like the clappers, we were only about 45mins late into Bangkok.

^^ And THAT'S happened before, LOL. Wise decision to arrive a day earlier, however!

I've seen it (and been on it) on time, 20 mins late, 40 mins late, an hour and a half late.

No real problem for the average traveller, but travel the day before if the appointment is that important.

Its actually about a dentist appointment- if I miss that appointment I'm up for a few hundred to change plane bookings, or its another trip to BKK from Oz!

PS- day train from Chiang Mai was 45 minutes late!

Train from Hat Yai to Bkk originated in Sungai Kolok: arrived in Hat Yai 1.5 hours late. Arrived in Bkk a bit more than three hours late.
This was a few weeks ago.

#12: Where did you board the train?
Did you adjust your watch with the border change?
