Sicily itinerary and questions

Hello fellow travellers,

My gf and I will be spending some time in Sicily 12-18 aug.

Our 3 priorities

1.Aeolian island: Stromboli
2.Cefalu
3.Taormina

We are flying into Catania and flying out Palermo. With the duration we have do you think we could fit these 3 in? If we have time to spare what else would you suggest? Since We are flying into and out of Catania and Palermo, we were thinking of spending a day in each but reading some blogs, they seem very similar and I get the feeling if we had some spare days, it may be better spent elsewhere.

We are thinking of hiring a car but dont know if it is necessary for the whole duration. What does everyone think?

Cheers,

John

You can fit them in,but its going to be very tight.

You can get to Taormina in a couple of hours (by bus)from Catania airport.

Getting to Stromboli is at least half a day from there...and then from Stromboli to Cefalu is almost a full day travel (boat and train).

Not a lot of point hiring a car if you are going to Stomboli.....

Both Palermo and Catania have interesting things to do...depends on your interests. What do you want to see/do? Why did you choose Sicily?

Stromboli was a main factor for us wanting to go sicily. We are after a nice and relaxing slow beach holiday where we can walk around the towns and get a feel for life as a local there. eat nice food (which im sure wont be hard to find) and just enjoying the simple things in life. I don't know if that helps. We don't want to go to areas that are too touristy and would much prefer to go to hidden gems that say only the locals would know.

we are definitely not wanting to see any ancient roman ruins because to put it frankly, we are sick of it.

we have very limited time I know so if hiring a car would definitely help us do our top 3 then I am all for that.

Ok....Taormina is the most touristy place in Sicily! And Cefalu is probably the second.........

You might be happier with a few days in the Aeolians (plenty of tourists there too in the summer, though most are Italian).

You could spend a few days driving around the Nebrodi or Madonie mountains with a hire car,but it will be no use to you on the islands....

after weeks of discussing what we want to do and whether to rent a car or not we have decided that this will be our basic itinerary.

12th sept: fly into catania. take shuttle bus into messina or milazzo and use the hydro to see Stromboli. If we cant see it then we will stay there the night.
13th sept: (stromboli/Taormina) if we see it the night before then we will head to Taormina from messina where we will rent a car for 6 days (we found http://www.autoeuropa.it which has an office in messina)
14: Taormina
15: Taormina/cefalu
16: cefalu
17: drive around to smaller places around Palermo
18: drive around to smaller places around Palermo
19th: home.

What do you all think? apologies for not responding earlier. we wanted to read a little bit more and look up transport and Stromboli tours before putting up our potential itinerary.
