It's a 2 lane road with many trucks and buses. You would be lucky to make it in 5 to 6 hrs. Last March I drove from Plays del Coco to Alajuela, took about 5 1/2 hrs.3
yes, it's around 4 hours - it kind of depends on where in the san jose area you are going. look here for distances and travel times: http://www.yourtravelmap.com5
You may want to check flights again. Typically Liberia is more expensive internationally...6
it depends. with the expansion of the liberia airport, there are more flights and more airlines flying into liberia and there have been some good deals.8
Agree with all. Renting a car is a easy, but don't drive at night if you can avoid it - the roads are very narrow and twisty, hardly any shoulder, and potholes can come out of nowhere. That said, Liberia to San Jose is one of the bigger roads in CR, and well paved. Driving is fine, just do it during the day.You can rent a car online with any of the major car rental companies - they'll list Liberia as a destination. We had the best luck with Economy, cars OK and prices cheap. Hertz had better cars, but a bit pricier. You may want to stay away from Mapache - heard bad things about service and car quality.

while i agree with mbfn about not driving after dark, i totally disagree about the choice of rental agencies.economy has a terrible reputation in costa rica and you can read post after post on other forums, including trip advisor, about people's horrible experiences. mapache, on the other hand, has a good reputation -- not sterling, mind you - but good.

Interesting - I found the complete opposite to be true, just based on our experiences and chatter from other travellers when we were there.I guess good advice would be to make sure that you fill out the damage report before you rent the car. Maybe take some pics, and even look under the car to make sure there's no damage. At least you'd be covered in case the company claims you damage the car.

the problem has not been with the damages to the car - but the problem has been with economy making charges on people's credit cards that were not warranted and then refusing to remove them. if you have any doubts, do a search for economy on the costa rica trip advisor forum and you'll see what i mean. even the owner of the agency has a bad reputation here in costa rica.of course, even a horrible business can do something right now and again!
