Stay In DelhiHey,
Looking for some advice. I will be traveling to Delhi in a few weeks for an internship. I will be over a month there and need a place to stay still. I am on a cheap budget. Any recommendations on just hostel living or could I get a cheap apartment for the month. Also any recommendations on area and places to stay.

2There are serviced apartments for rent in Delhi but they are usually for business travellers and likely priced more then your budget.
Also Delhi is a big city and you should plan to stay close to your place of internship to reduce your travel time and cost and if you tell us where in Delhi you need to be for your internship then we can recommend an area that will suit you or at least comment on your daily commute options.
There is also the question of safety and it would not be a good idea to rent an apartment from strangers and it might be best to get help from your place of internship or at least if they could put you in contact with some of your collegues and perhaps you can share accomodation with them or stay with them as a paying guest.

First of all, you being a foreigner people may try to take advantage while telling you the cost, facilities etc.
So take care about that.
Second, I am giving some of the links of working women's hostel. Try that options it is cheap. But how much it far away from your internship, you have to decide that.
Swati Working Girls Hostel
St Thomas Girls Senior Secondary School, Mandir Marg, Connaught Place, New Delhi, Delhi 110001
011 2374 6206
Indira Niketan Working Women Hostel
Laxmi Bai Nagar, Near Sarojini Nagar Market, New Delhi, Delhi 110023
011 2688 0113
However, I would recommend you should ask the people with whom you would be doing intership.
A month is short enough for them & they will be able to provide you a decent accomodation.
Also, it would be nice if you take some person along with you or some person may enquire on your behalf in the above mentioned hostels. person should be from the institution where you are doing internship
Take care and do post if you have any more queries.

4If you want company - the backpackers stay around PaharGanj which has a metro station close by - you'll certainly get somewhere within budget there - pick up an old LP & Rough Guide from a charity shop or borrow from library - both full of phone Nos of flops - no need to book ahead either.
Jess - as a pretty Western lass, you are going to receive offers of help and advice from several young males who cant wait any longer for their mothers to find them a good suitable wife, or worse, older males trying their luck.
You have recd a long missive from one who actually says very little and he perhaps and others will send you personal messages direct to you. These persons are not interested in your welfare or else they would communicate only thru' this public thread. Do not answer any of these - if they are even slightly objectionable then please report to ThornTree by going on to that individual's profile.
In other words the scammers and pests will start before you get here.
it is a safe country for single girls - just be a little careful and dont do anything to encorage them eg smile or even answer them.

5I am sorry "jessjdavies" if i have bothered you.
This is really suprising.
So far till now I have send only one PM and that too to "Grahamapoole"; just trying to know him.
Probably he is a very insecure person here.
However, I must appreciate the job he is doing by cautioning you folks for any danger/wrong things which might happen with you.
On the place to stay - Paharganj might be the cheapest; but it all depends upon your need. (Distance from your internship & Rent Rates)
Stay safe and take care.
"Grahamapoole" - this one is for you in pm :)

6Thanks for all the great advice and precaution. As I have lived and traveled in many countries around the world I usually have my guard up when traveling. I think will end up going the hostel route in Paharganj. Any good recommendations on good budget ones close to the metro? Also, I will be at the Maulana Azad Medical College, which is close to the metro, but traveling throughout Delhi really collecting data the whole time.

7Jess - cant suggest anything any more - whar is your budget?
We stayed in Metropolis guest house in March - at the West End of Paharganj, 5 minutes from metro but I fear it is out of your range altho' am sure you could negotiate a great discount - maybe worth staying your first nite there - phone them from UK rather then email.

8Would Rs. 30,000 per month inclusive breakfast and dinner in South Delhi work?
