august travel ideas

come on then all you seasoned travellers.
the challenge is to think of somewhere for my next escape.
it needs to an interesting culture-loads to see and do ,preferably with an affable population
not so hot or wet that it spoils /restricts the activities
travelable in the school summer hols
so thinking caps on please

So where are you starting from? And what are your holiday dates? And your budget?
And where have you been already?

Hi Carolyn Like go-2 says you dont give any indication of your time span and where you are coming from so its hard to give you some suggestions. However having said that I would certainly recommend Russia. You wont die of the heat, like you would in many places that time of the year, or be in monsoons and it has tons going for it. Both Moscow and St Petersburg, which are the cities most people head for are stunning. They both have amazing buildings, tons of history, good food and both the Bolshoi theatre in Moscow and the Marinsky theatre in St Petersburg will give you an opportunity to see a world class performance in two of the worlds most famous theatres. Its not the cheapest place in the world but with some care it is affordable. If you had extra time you could also include a visit to the Ukraine. Kiev is also stunning and there is loads to see and do.
have a great trip

You have to visit Ukraine =)
Kyiv and Lviv are two of the most amazing cities in Europe..there are lots of places to visit in Ukraine and the prices are affordable, culture is amazing and the overall trip is going to be very interesting, if you like to discover new areas and new cultures. Check this book about travelling to Ukraine: Travel Ukraine. , even though it was written for Euro-2012 visitors, it has a lot of useful information about travelling to Ukraine and wonderful places to see in this country. Moreover, you will find a lot of useful tips on how to survive in Ukraine and how to deal with the culture. I consider this book one of the best tour guides written so far about Ukraine..so, if you decide you visit Ukraine - the book is a must have.

And I do wish you to decide to visit Ukraine =) It is a wondeful country with wonderful people and, by the way, extraordinary tasty food and attractive culture. If you do not know where to go - visit Ukraine!

Depending on your budget, your trip to Kenya will be once in a life time experience. Have you ever thought of coming face to face with the seventh wonder of the modern world? Yes, the wildebeest Migration! Never will you this anywhere in the world. A four to six days safari to Maasai Mara National Reserve bring you closer to the most rewarding wildlife park in the world. You encounter the Great Migration of the wildebeests not the way you see it on the National Geographic, this time real. Slightly above a million wildebeests cross over from Serengeti in Tanzania to Maasai Mara in Kenya. And not only the this, you also come face to face with the famous Big Five and other wildlife that can never be seen anywhere, like the Topi and many other. Take a few hours off the safari and visit the villages occupied by the Maasai people, so traditional, so primitive, living the way they did hundreds of years ago, and proud of it. One of the best experience. Few days at the beaches of Mombasa , Malindi or Lami is another better option. Take one of the regular www.villagelifesafari.com for this experience.
Laura.

Scandinavia .. I was there during late July and August a few years ago, and loved it. Not a budget destination, but if you camp it helps keep costs down.

Where are you from? Where I live is fabulous in the summer, that being Victoria, BC, and there is all of Vancouver Island to explore.

Eastern Europe - especially the Czech republic (there's plenty of culture and history in Prague), Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria - all fascinating.

It is winter in the Southern Hemisphere so it will not be too hot in Buenos Aires, Peru, Equador etc... Same goes for Sydney or Cape Town. Ethiopia is a beatiful place to visit in August. I highly recommend Lalibela.
