Sand in GuatemalaAnyone know of any local sand used for glass making? Looking for sand to Frac gas wells and all frac sands are glass sands--but not all glass sands are frac sands.
Had heard that someone was testing Guate sand to see if it passed specs.

2Hydraulic fracking -- just what Guatemala needs.
Maybe next they'll put a nuclear power plant in Tikal park.

3Sharp adds that the demand for high-quality frac-sand far exceeds the supplly available and, with the growing number of shale oil and gas wells projected to be drilled during the next five years, the supply-demand gap will only widen.
The supply-demand gap will cause frac sand prices to increase, Gas Business Briefing notes.
Northern White frac sand today goes for between $90/ton and $110/ton, Sharp adds.

I think OP was asking about a source for frac sand NOT proposing to start hydraulic fracking in Guatemala. I would assume he/she is looking to buy/export the sand. Whilst this forum might not be the best source for such info, and I have little appreciation of the environmental impacts of sand exports from Guatemala, maybe establishing a new resource might help a bit ? Or maybe I just mis-interpreted the OP's question.

8Just thought that tourists would notice local craft glass and might have known the source of the glass sand.. Mexico does not have a single source of glass sand and I had heard they import some from Guatemala.
I'll be in Guatemala for a few weeks and thought that while there I should look for a source of sand. Just got several sand samples from Peru and they don't meet specs. There is a shortage of sand and the lab I use is running samples from France, China, and India right now.
Gas & Oil in Guatemala--just finished reading the Road to Ruins--Mayan expert who writes that in the 50's and 60's the best way to find Maya ruins in Guate was to follow the roads the oil companies were building in the Petan. Surprised how many times he mentions getting free rides on Oil company planes to airfields in the jungle so he could do his work.
Example of sand use----Norway plans to drill 7000 gas wells in Pa over next 8 years and needs 3000 ton of sand per well at $80 a ton. Do the math--lot of beer money.
