I've brought my Lonely Planet into China twice without problem.

I sometimes hold up my China LP in Tiananmen and other crowded areas when I want a taste of life on the wild side

They would get on with their thing anyway.

Just avoid the hassle as I said before and buy the real thing in Chinese. Banned; take back your comment.

I bought LP uk and SE asia several years ago in BJ and just borrowed one LP from library last week.! agree with #7 that you should revoke your statement about banned

4 days ago, I took a trip to Shanghai only to get some LP books. I went to the big Foreign language book store on Fuzhou Road, where I used to shop. every country/region I wanted was available, but not LP China. I asked the staff and he pointed at some city guide books and told me that those are the only ones they had. I seriously thought that LP China was banned.

The imported LP books are exhorbitantly expensive in China. LP Central Asia marked $33 sells for US $22 on amazon but 285 Yuan ($45) in the above mentioned book store.

During the entire time I lived in Beijing (2007-2009) the LP China was certainly officially banned for the simple (if completely ridiculous) reason that its frontispiece map failed to show Taiwan as a "province of China." For this reason, none of the state-run bookstores (including the aforementioned four-storey Foreign Language Bookstore on Wangfujing) were allowed to sell it. (This doesn't mean you couldn't bring the book into the country; it just means it couldn't legally be imported and offered for sale.)

In those days, the best place to buy the LP China in Beijing was at one of the hostels which would sell it "under the counter," so to speak. Also try the souvenir shop attached to the Pass By Bar in Nanluoguxiang, which used to have stacks of the book.

Me neither but I learn from the fools I meet one the way. But I never could afford one anyway.
