Honestly I don't think a day trip to Rome makes sense, as you'll spend an awful lot of time and money on trains to have just a few hours for sightseeing.

But if you really want to, take the Eurostar (high speed train) from Milano Centrale to Roma Termini - buy your ticket in advance from http://www.trenitalia.it (Italian Railways).

Agree with Aribo complete waste of time and money doing a day trip to Rome from Milan, there are plenty of nice day trips from Milan, Bergamo, Verona, Turin are all easy to reach plus many others including Lake Maggiore. The quickest option to Rome is 3 hours one way but even booking in advance you will be lucky to pay less than €50 each way

To give you an idea what this trip would look like (sample date 4 June):

Milano Centrale 07:00h - Roma Termini 10:05h
Roma Termini 20:15h - Milano Centrale 23:40h
Cheapest available fare: € 108.80 including booking charges etc (if applicable)

At first glance you may think that this € 108.80 buys you 10 hours and 10 minutes in Rome. However, you need to take into account that it takes time to find your way out of Termini station, get to the sights you want to visit (you need to take a bus or metro to get to the most popular sights as none of these are particularly close to the station), have lunch and dinner etc and get back to Termini in time to catch your train - the last day train by the way - so I don't think you'd have more than 7-8 hours left for sightseeing.

If you want to do this, Tren Italia is the way to go. Start watching for the cheapest fares now. Don't book last minute as you can save money one day to the next.

Unless you have some business to do in Rome, I honestly would NOT recommend making the trip to Rome. Such compressed travel leads to disappointment more than anything and Rome is such a beautiful place, I would hate for you to not enjoy it.

OP...how long have you got in total in Italy?

Can you move things around so you can spend some time in Rome? Or else,as suggested above...better to see something nearer to Milan......

Reconsidering this is a good idea! Especially if you don't have any flexibility - you just never know, you could end up getting hit with a train strike or train cancellation. I
