Visa Questions from an American
Does anyone know how far in advance one can get a tourist visa for Kazakhstan? I'm going on an RTW trip with my family and we're planning to get to Kazakhstan in month four (my son was adopted from Kaz many years ago and we're taking him back to his birth country). Can I get a visa in the USA before I leave or it is only valid for something like three months? If that is the case, does anyone know if I can get a visa in Bangkok or Singapore? Is there any expedited service? Unfortunately from what I've read it looks like it will take about a week under normal circumstances and that's a long time to hang out and wait for a visa to come through. Any other ideas?
I'm excited for the possibility (rumor?) of visa-free entry being introduced, but haven't seen any more information on this.
We are travelling in 2013.
Cheers,
Jenn

The Kazakh visa must be used 3 months from date of issue. Furthermore, it is date specific. This means you can enter on/after the "entry date" and before/on the exit date. Getting visas like this so far in advance means you travel timing must be perfect or you could miss your window of opportunity.2
You might get lucky by 2013, but doubt the old soviet ways have changed that much yet :-)I would look for where there is a Kazakh embassy and you could hang out a bit. You should be able to move around in many countries with just a copy of your passport as well, while the visa is being processed.

A single entry tourist visa has long been valid from 3 months from date of issue, and 30 days in country with date specific entries. Look at the statement after point 6 of the tourist visa."Visas are generally issued for single or double entries valid for up 3 months. The length of stay is usually up to one month, at the discretion of the consulate."
Having lived in Central Asia for some time, this is how it always was. That said, with supposed visa reform just around the corner, perhaps this has changed.

We applied for our Kazakh visas at the London embassy in the middle of April, the visa is Valid July 23rd - August 22nd. This was thriteen weeks in Advance so slightly over three months. It many well vary from one embassy to the next but in London at least they seemed really laid back and personable.6
I applied for my Kazakh visa in March in Vienna... It's valid from 5th August till 4th September... So "valid for 3 months after issuing" isn't true... (I also asked in advance, if I can get already a visa, and they said "Yes, no problem")BTW: Visa process is very straightforward! Even an address of a friend in Kazakhstan was sufficient!
