@13, 14, 22, 26: Zipcar does operate in Atlanta, and would likely be your best solution given what #26 says about intended use. Also check http://www.getaround.com/

Zipcar does operate in Atlanta,
Yeah, I was still thinking Athens. ZipCar ZipCar is a deal where you join a service that has a lot of cars. When you need a car for a short time--say a few hours or a day or two, you reserve one of their cars and pay just for the time you use it. Insurance is included in the rate.

You must be 21 and have a good driving record.

Soem universities have ZipCar programs, with discounted rates. The cars are even located on the campus. Some universities require only that you be 18. I can't find a list of participating universities, just that Emory and Georgia State in Atlanta are participants, but you can search for your specific university on their web site.

Yeah I know what ZipCar is, thanks!
But the problem is though that we just established that I don't have a driving record, which means I probably can't join, correct?

Well if I can and want to it won't be a problem: I'll be going to Emory and it seems like they have a ZipCar program;)!

@viajeroabcd: I get your skepticism, but my problem is that I don't like to be dependent of other people. It means so much that if I can't find anyone I like with a car, I'll have to make friends with people I don't like. Additionally, I don't like taking advantage of people their goods and of a friendship that exists. Plus, I could ride a bike (maybe you have never been to the Netherlands, but we all ride a bike), but biking to, for example, New Orleans for a short week or whatever is not really optional.

And you all have no idea how invisible you are to American drivers. (I find it telling that the token Dutchman at my workplace chooses to walk rather than ride to his job, and saves his bicycle riding for weekend mornings when the traffic is light. He also wears a helmet and a bright yellow vest or jersey.) Take a look at http://bicyclesafe.com/ to get some idea of what you'll face over here.

I do know about ignorance on the part of American drivers: don't worry. I've did enough biking in the US to know this;). However, I think the person who referred to this meant that I could just use the bike from campus to the classroom or whatever. That is very possible. People bike everywhere. That it is more dangerous in the US than in the Netherlands, is stating the obvious;).

ZipCar at Emory

From the ZipCar FAQs: can i join if i have a drivers license from outside the us or canada? The answer is, yes, if you can get us a driving record.

There is a link on that page that tells you how to get your driving record. One hassle would be getting some sort of official translation.
