car rental
My husband and I want to drive the Coastal Route from Sydney to Adelaide in January/February 2012. Is there an advantage to doing it east to west, i.e. from Adelaide to Sydney rather than Sydney - Adelaide? On a a previous trip to NZ we learned, once we had arrived, that vehicles are cheaper to rent going from the south island to the north rather than the other way around and wondered if there were any similar quirks in Australia.1
I doubt that car rentals will be an issue re pricing but do a search re a site like http://www.drivenow.com.au/ and you will get an idea. You'll also find on there somewhere, something about relocations which you can also look at on http://www.standbyrelocs.com/ if you want to be a bit flexible re doing it Sydney - Melbourne - Adelaide in two different legs.
East to west btw is Sydney - Melbourne - Adelaide.
We know you guys and especially bikers can get all confused coming from the NH.
Getting down to other pertinent issues other than which way the water goes down the bath outlet downunder, you may want to look at which direction you head based on when in January you intend to leave for Xmas/January is main school/businesses/industries holiday break time and that will mean areas like the south coast of NSW, Victorian coastline both east and west of Melbourne can be chockers with holidayer makers and also traffic.
If you're not starting until the last week of January, it'll not be so bad as most will have headed back home to get kids ready for school and back to work etc., though if Australia Day , Jan26 falls on a Friday/Monday/weekend, that long weekend will be busy too.
February is also regularly our hottest month, SA and western Victoria probably hotter than eastern Vic and southern NSW and so if you're more into February for your travels, it might be better to start in January in SA for that reason as well as avoiding holidaying peak.
The only problem with that is to get the travelling of a day done in coolest time you'll want to be travelling of a morning and that'll mean generally driving into a sun, but only an issue close to sunrise and at least you'll know the traffic coming from the east will not have sun glare.

You may need a DeLorean to go in January/February 2012.Relocations are a good idea, but rental cars in Australia are reasonably cheap. Discounts are available for 7 days but there are also discounts depending on who you are flying with....
To answer your question, it is not like NZ for cars - campervans - you did not ask - the flow might be east to west.
