1I thought about this route, but I will probably have to go the other way and stop at Langmusi, if I see this town at all.
I will probably spend considerable time in Xiahe, as I heard very good things about that town and areas around it.

2Check ahead of time to be sure that Xiahe is open to foreigners! Sometimes it is closed for national holidays.
If you're going from Chengdu up to Gansu, be prepared for a long train ride, (about 20 hours to Lanzhou, the provincial capital) Langmusi is v. popular for horse rides/all inclusive tours living amongst nomads! Fun!
While you are up in Gansu, it might be worth looking over to Qinghai province, as Xining also has some really nice attractions, like Ta'er si (Kumblum Monastery), and Qinghai lake. Plus, Xining > Lanzhou.

3It sounds like you've got the main stops all mapped out. Continuing north from Xiahe, fhe buddhist grottoes on the Yellow River at Binglingsi make for an interesting stop-off between Xiahe and Lanzhou. You need to get a bus to Linxia, then a taxi to the reservoir. From there arrange a speedboat to take you to the grottoes. There is some route info on this map.
