Slovenia - help with where to stop overHi all we have 7 days in Slovenia in October. We will stay 2 nights in Ljubljana and then plan 5 days covering the Julian Alps (Bled round to Kobarid) before going down to Skocjan Caves and then returning to Ljubljana to catch the train to Zagreb. I would like some advice on where to stay on the way. We will have a rental car. I am thinking one night at Bled (or Bohinj?). Would it make sense to then base ourselves around Kobarid for a couple of days? Where would people recommend in the area around the Skocjan caves to stay? We are a couple in our mid 50's - enjoy the outdoors, history, drinking coffee and watching the world go by. Appreciate any ideas. Polly

1It's been a while since I was there, but I'd suggest two nights around Bled, so you can simply relax for a day on the lake or in the villages.

2both Lake Bled and Lake Bohinj are beautiful... you should visit both of them! There are only
24 kilometers apart. I agree that you should spent 2 nights there, one is not enough.
In Kobarid: you shouldn't miss 1st World War museum: http://www.kobariski-muzej.si/?lng=ang
Close to Kobarid is one luxurious place to stay:
(I haven't been there yet, since is above my budget)
But it is supposed to be really nice.
There is a good tourist farm close to Skocjan Caves: http://www.hudicevec.si/ENG/presentation.php
Otherwise: Tripadvisor and booking.com are full with reviews of accommodation. October is a good month to travel since it is already low tourist season.

4From Škocjan caves it is very close to the Adriatic coast, so you might consider staying there, perhaps in Piran.
You could also check the Goriška Brda region (nick-named the Tuscanny of Slovenia) and stay there for a night instead of Kobarid:
and if you like horses, make sure you stop in Lipica (home of the Lipizzaner horses of the Spanish Riding School in Vienna) on the way to Škocjan caves.
Enjoy your stay!

5Bled and Bohinj both have a good selection of accommodations - Bled being a bit more touristy, but I guess this will not be an issue considering the time of year.
If you plan to do some sport activities Bovec (near Kobarid) is a centre for water sports and a great starting point for hiking trips. I agree about the WW1 museum in Kobarid - it is definitely one of the best museums in the country.
Lipica, Škocjan caves (or Postojna cave), Goriška Brda and Piran can all be visited in two or three days while staying at the same place. Of course if you choose your accommodation somewhere in the region. They are however all well worth a visit.
