Tour group or plan my own?

Hey all. I'm planning a trip in September for a couple of weeks down to Argentina/Uruguay and was debating whether or not to go with a tour company (e.g. G Adventures or Intrepid) that have what looks to be a pretty itinerary from BA to Montevideo to Iguazu Falls to Rio, or just plan the trip myself. I will be travelling by myself and am in my mid-thirties and this will be my first international travel trip. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

as beerfree says Argentina/Uruguay/Brazil are very easy for solo travel.....think most advice here on TT will always veer toward solo travel over using tour companies.....people who are planning their first trips will always have doubts and fears....its only natural but for the majority after only a few days in they'll wonder what all the fuss is about. the trip you are planning is a well travelled route and if you are any way sociable you should not be travelling on your own for long. i would suggest solo travel because
  • much more flexible...not sticking to a rigid schedule.....if you want to spend an extra day at the waterfalls nothing stopping you
  • cheaper.....many organised tours have hidden costs
  • travel with whoever you want to......not stuck on a bus with people you may not get on with for 3 weeks
  • sights.....you may find yourself going to excellent site/place that you never planned on.....on the recommendation of other travellers

Excellent response by ger_power! Only you know whether you need the assurance of having company that a guided trip will provide - if you don't, then traveling on your own (and doing your own planning ) may be more rewarding.
