Big trees and real jungle adventure in Peru - where?

Hey guys, I'm trying to narrow down which bit of the Amazon to visit in Peru. I've read a lot and there is much to choose from so wanted to see if I could get some opinions from personal experience.

What I'm looking for is: 1) Lowland rainforest where there are many really huge trees and a canopy way up high to stare up at in wonder. 2) Slightly more off-the-beaten-track, longer, more challenging jungle treks, perhaps in more remote areas rather than more touristy jungle lodge type of things.

Any ideas appreciated - thank you!

Tom

Thanks very much 'El Chino' for a really detailed response, this is very helpful! Sounds like heading to Iquitos and working it out from there is the best bet and I will look at Manti Expeditions. Sounds like the local people could do with the tourist trade right now and I saw from another thread that they need help on the ground too so perhaps I can make myself useful there as well.
Thanks again, and safe travels.

I stayed at Tambopata Eco Lodge, accessible via Puerto Maldonaldo by van then boat in a two hour journey.

We didn't handle as many animals except for a caiman (also snatched by our guide from the water). We saw howler monkeys, sloths, piranhas, and various other Amazonian birds and animals. I thoroughly recommend this place but rather than list everything I have included a tripadvisor link that ranks it 2 out of 14 such places in that park:-

Tomnixon. Also consider contact iPerĂș, the National Tourism Board (24-hour tel: (+51 1) 574-8000, iperu@promperu.gob.pe and iperuiquitos@promperu.gob.pe; www.peru.travel), in order to ask for registered lodges, travel agencies, destinations, routes in Iquitos and Peru, as well as the record of complaints of the tour companies before to hire one. iPeru send you free and official information.
