One romantic night in Vancouver

Hello all,

I am flying to Seattle, USA to visit a sweetheart who I met back in September in London, UK. She was traveling Europe and has since flown back to the States, I have since flown back to East Timor where I live and work permanently.

I've saved up ever since I left UK and have now booked tickets to stay with her for 10 days in Seattle for my 21st birthday.

I'm going to surprise her on my last weekend in the States with a trip up to Vancouver. I have already booked a hotel room on May 4 (skyline view of city, jacuzzi, chocolate strawberries, the lot) of course, it's costing me an arm and a leg, but it's worth it.

The problem I have is I don't know where to take her for a romantic evening before the hotel? I've done some research and nothing really special has jumped out on me.

She loves live shows. theater/musicals especially. but I haven't found any she would particullly enjoy ('Cats' isn't our idea of fun) was hoping for something a little more off the beaten trail. Even if it's good food at a restaurant, or a more different kind of live show.

Can anybody help me out? the hotel will be super romantic, but other than that I am just lost for ideas which will make our whole night perfect?

You could have a look at the website for "The Cultch" to see what they have on when you are here. It is located on Victoria Drive. Commercial Drive is just a few minutes walk away and goes on for several blocks with all kinds of eateries, shops, etc. -- a great place for browsing, eating, having a special coffee, etc. the restaurant "Havana" sometimes has on live shows as well and that is just a few minutes away from The Cultch.

I'm from Vancouver and a few times a year the mister and I do this-get a hotel for the night, makes resos at a nice restaurant and make a weekend of hanging out downtown.

What we usually do is a pick a neighbourhood for a stroll, late lunch, and maybe some shopping. (This past Feb it was Gastown). Another idea would be to do afternoon tea at the Wedgewood, one of my favourite hotel bar/lounges: http://www.wedgewoodhotel.com/files_2/documents/bacafternoontea.pdf

I'd also see if Ballet B.C. might be doing anything, or if they are hosting any other companies: http://www.balletbc.com/

I'd also check the Arts Club Theatre to see what's on: http://www.artsclub.com/

A great view for cheap is at the Cloud 9 revolving restaurant. Just head up for a few drinks on a nice day: http://www.cloud9restaurant.ca/

There's nothing more romantic than walking along the seawall by sunset. That's more romantic than going to see a show, in my opinion.

The Arts Club is no one's idea of 'off the beaten trail' in fact it's a howling bore.

Federico's Supper Club on Commercial Drive if you're interested in an old-school Italian supper club with dancing: http://www.federicossupperclub.com/

"and your ideas are...."

Skip theatre here altogether and concentrate on outdoorsy activities as per Carmanah's post.

and what happens if/when it rains, like it most likely will. They could get lucky, and have great weather, but odds are....

just being realistic. Having lived here my whole life, I just always know to make alternate plans if the rain will affect them. They normally don't, as I'm used to it, but for someone not from here, it can really put a damper on things (ba dum cha).

Thanks for replies. I've booked us into the Sunset Dinner Cruise around Vancouver Bay, hopefully it'll have a really beautiful view of the city, plus live music and a calm, starry night if I'm lucky. It's not anybodies recommendation (probably because of expense!) but I'm happy to spend a little.

I have from 9pm onwards to impress aswell. We'll probably take a walk around downtown, Stanley Park, the Seawall and then back to Hotel.

We have the whole of the next day morning and afternoon in Vancouver. So I will definitely look into you recommendations. I will be eating at a Lebanese restaurant "nuba on hastings" for lunch the next day.

We'll be heading to the countryside for camping that evening. Maybe even as far as Vancouver Island, we haven't decided on which campground yet (still asking for recommendations actually) We should be in for an awesome last weekend together! Be kind to us VC
