Hi, the ferry to Langkawi from Penang will take around 2 hours 30 min and for the best beach in Langkawi, I would suggest Chenang Beach. It is very convenience for you if you stay around this area, many chalets, motels and hotels and other facilities such as shops restaurants etc...beach is nice with water sports facilities and also nice sunset.Hope you enjoy you stay in Langkawi..cheers

zakmanja pretty much covered your questions i would just like to give you this link http://www.langkawi-ferry.com/Home/Schedule.aspx#penang which has duration and schedule information. Just be sure to note that there are only 2 ferry times leaving from Penang to Langkawi which are 8.15am and 8.30am, if you need to leave at another time your best option is to fly using either http://www.airasia.com or http://www.fireflyz.com.my/ both are low cost airlines.Happy Travels

For question 2 :-For sands and swimming, go Tanjung Rhu. Less people, but hotel is more expensive .
Pantai Cenang is the most common beach for backpacker.
