Route through Romania in motorhome

We are planning a trip from Sofia to Budapest and we have no insurance for Serbia. We have been told a lot of the roads are in bad conditions and the ferries across the Danube are very espensive. Is this correct, has anyone any recent experience of the roads and ferries?

Roads on the Romanian part of the short route (Sofia - Vidin - ferry to Calafat - Calafat - Turnu Severin - Caransebes - Timisoara - Szeged - Budapest ) have been more or less fixed.
The ferry still seems to be relatively expensive (link), €46 for a minibus.

In the early 1990s I saw plenty of Italians crossing Romania in their motorhomes. They all seemed to enjoy it and survived, can't be much to travel that way 20 years later. At least there are proper campings now. And bad roads in my experience lead to interesting places, just don't be in a hurry!
