Liveaboard or Trek Suggestions Please (Lombok/Komodo)Hi Everyone,
I'm putting the final touches on an itinerary for a month long trip to Bali and Lombok and I'm looking for recommendations for a possible trek or liveaboard situation that would be accessible from Gili Trawangan.
3 nights (June 30-July 2) -- we will be heading to Lembongan July 2.
I'd really appreciate any suggestions as we've never done anything like this and I can't really differentiate one provider from another. My inner travel agent is on overload and I'd love to hear your advice.
This is what the rest of the trip looks like (and I've managed to book reasonably priced homestays all the way through -- the research thus far has been so much fun and I've met some very nice folks already). I don't normally book anything in advance as we don't normally travel during high season, but it's been an interesting online journey, so far.
June 16-19 – Ubud
June 19-22 – Lovina
June 22-25 – Jimbaran
June 25- June 30 – Gili Trawangan
3 nights June 30 – July 2 – Possible Liveaboard? Trek? -- ** This is the blank that could be filled with some sort of thing -- though if it's too tight or outrageously expensive, we'd be quite happy to continue along happily doing whatever it is that we'll be doing at that time. We're experienced travellers and we can be active or not. We're not terribly good tourists and so we don't get anxious about seeing all the sights, etc.
July 2-July 7 – Lembongan
July 7-July 11 – Amed
July 11-July 14 – Legian
As for budget: I have no idea how much something like a liveaboard costs or should cost or what is a reasonable cost or what to expect for the amount spent. I did say to my husband that I'd be willing to contribute a few hundred dollars toward something like this. If a trip like this is over $500-$700, then we'd probably not do it, frankly, but we might be convinced with a great review or something.
Happy Travels and thank you again for your help.

3 nights is not enough time for a liveaboard to Komodo, starting from Lombokk. I suggest you take a flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo (e.g. with Sky or Lion) and do a short-distance liveaboard there. Have a look at the tours Shinta offers on Bali Reptile Rescue. Ask her to take you to Rinca or go there by yourselves. Rinca is the best place to see the dragons in their natural habitat. The park rangers will take you on a couple of hours' hike to see them. I did it with kids. Two nights in LB would suffice to go on a day trip to Rinca. The region is great for diving and snorkelling too!

2Merrianne, I agree that you'll have to start from Labuhanbajo if you want to see Komodo in 3 days. I'm doing a liveaboard trip from there on the KLM Moana (booked thru dive-the-world.com) when we visit in September. Their itinerary seems pretty flexible. Keep us posted on what you wind up doing. Happy sailing.

3I agree with the other posts. If you are really set on a boat trip however, I can recommend this one having done it in August 2011 http://www.peramatour.com/46-Sea%20Adventure-Hunting-Komodo-by-Camera-01-2N-3D.html , they have had really good reports but also some incidents. It should fit your budget but looks like the schedule would not suit you unless you left Gilli T earlier. There are some good posts about this boat trip on this forum that will be helpful.

4Great suggestions. We are pretty flexible and so I'll do some more research to see what I can root out. There are some fantastically posh trips out there that would be amazing if money were no object... It might be that something will surface while we're on Gili T as well. Thank you very much for kindly responding here. I really appreciate it. All the best.

5I am also looking for a good way to visit komodo and came across this article in one of the LP forums.
Please read it and decide for yourselves what to make of it.
