Three varied questions....
First, how safe is it to drink water from hostel/public bathroom taps in Western Europe (+ Budapest)? Do travellers on a shoestring do this much? Must be a great money saver.Second, anyone got any recommendations for some good music/books to listen to/read whilst on the move? I have a decent e-library of stuff but am willing to add. My tastes are varied. What do you like, then I'll research it myself to see if it appeals.
Third, I plan on watching a Hertha Berlin home league game at the Olympic Stadium. Do they allow small digital camera's into the stadium?

Must be a great money saver.+A great stomach scraper, more like...I don't know that it's advisable to drink water from "public bathroom taps" anywhere...however, the water from kitchen taps in hostels in Budapest and elsewhere is probably as safe - if not safer - than where you come from...
The only place I've ever avoided the local water is St Petersburg in Russia which carries a bug that the locals are immune to...

In one of life's neater ironies I have recently purchased the latest in electronic eBooks but will be taking, among other authors, Edgar Wallace, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens and Joshua Slocum on it.The water may well be good enough to clean your teeth (though I do prefer a cleansing Riesling myself), but always cover the toilet seat with at least three layers of cardboard.

For the greater part of my life I have lived in dwellings dependent on rain water tanks for their water supply, so with the pure water that falls from the sky (and it has been pretty unpolluted in most areas where I've lived) comes a cocktail of bird, snake and spider shit.
Good for the soul, the pocket and the digestive tract and in Asia I'm at a distinct advantage over those who venture forth from more sterile environments.

Aren't you? I've never been stopped from using mine in an English stadium. Tap water is absolutely fine, just don't drink it in the public bogs that you might find in a station, park etc. Even so, I've drank from water fountains designated as drinking water all over the world lately and it hasn't made me ill, I can't see it being a problem in Germanyy or where have you.12
Hi,like #11 said: I've been drinking water from kitchen taps (not toilet!) in many countries and I've never had any problems whatsoever. The general rule is the farther south and east you get, the more careful you should be. I always clean my water bottle with dish washing liquid before refilling it, to be on the safe side. If you're really scared - and believe me, there's no reason! - use the hostel kitchen to boil the water before drinking it.

Again thank you for the replies. I think I'll be drinking from the taps. Can't do too much damage and as I'm in west European cities I would imagine the risk is low.9 - Well I never take my camera in but I see daytrippers having problems with taking cameras in all the time.
10 - Yeah I thought the same thing for the first time as I was typing that.
I'm sure as well as seeing other people have problems I've seen signs that along with umbrellas, fireworks, bottle caps and knives etc - you also can't bring in cameras or video recording equipment. I could be wrong.
