Could I get some advice re: Vancouver road trip?
Hi there! my boyfriend and I are moving to Vancouver in May but we are arriving on April 19 which gives us 10 days for a west coast road trip. I was just wondering what makes more sense: a road trip to Alberta to check out the Rockies or a trip to Vancouver Island where we have some friends to stay with? Weather-wise, cost-wise, time-wise, what makes the most sense? Thanks!1
Depens on what you prefer: rain on the Island or snow in the mountains :-).There will still be lots of snow in the Rockies in late april, so you won't have much opportunity for hiking for camping. Of course, I'm sure there are still winter activities going on. However, it is a bit of a drive from Vancouver, and the highways can still close April, especially with avalanches.
On the Island, you might get rain, or you might be good weather - really hard to say in April, you'll probably get some of both. However, it is closer, cheaper if you have someone to stay with, and probably less restrictive on the activies you might want to do.

I'm not sure I'd say one or the other would be a better overview to BC. In general, I wouldn't say one is better than the other, but, given the season, I would think that the Island is better.Up in the mountains is still going to be pretty cold (certainly way, way too cold for camping) and you'll miss out on a lot of the best activities. Summer is much better for the Rockies.
On the Island, the weather should be milder, and snow won't prevent you from doing as much as it might in the rockies.

April's the worst time to see the Rockies unless you want to admire snow-capped mountains and frozen lakes.Go to Vancouver Island. The spring flowers will be at the height of their blossoms and the temperate rainforest is as beautiful in the spring as it is in the summer. Be sure to go to Pacific Rim National Park and spend a minimum of 3 days in that area.
Another idea is to spend two nights on Galiano Island in between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.

What is the best time of year to do whale watching around Vancouver??8
the island will be way cheaper. you can get by easily on vancouver transit, - or if your driving it's more $$ for the ferry but still cheaper than driving to Alberta I would assume. And yeah, won't everything just be sort of melting in the Rockies.. the towns will probably be mucky and brown as all the snow and gravel melt..I live in Victoria and on our sunny days - there have been some ! - it's beutifull. Lot's of tulips ect coming up. But it's been chillier than normal so it may not be our best spring ever. I second the notion of checking out a gulf island. Or get yourself to Tofino / Ucuelet ? Off season prices are still happening right now
