A couple of people I know have got lucky with a bus from Siem Reap to Kratie which takes 6-7 hours rather than the 8-10 you get with Sorya. One reported it went via the Mekong town of Stung Trang (not Stung Treng), neither of them can remember the name of the bus company.
Does anyone else know of this route and how to book in Siem Reap? I'm looking to travel this Friday...

Never heard of it. AFAIK there are no Ford express vans on that stretch. There are 3 companies in Cambodia running Ford vans, Neak Krohorm (near Old Market in SR), Angkor Express (belongs to Virak Buntham, I wouldn't touch them) and one more that does the run Phnom Penh to Poipet and doesn't go through Siem Reap.
6- 7 hours sounds pretty normal for Siem Reap- Kratie. 4 hours to Kampong Cham, change bus, 2 hours to Kratie.

Most people, with the exception of these two, report it being 10 hours on the big buses based on a lot of stopping. I'm also not sure if the Kampong Cham to Kratie bit is on the fast Chhlong road or the slow Snoul road. If it's the slow one then that's more like four hours.5
On almost every route I've taken Sorya are pretty much always the fastest just because the don't mess around stopping so much (PP- mondulkiri, wasn't too good, but Rith mony was worse). So now if I'm taking a big bus I just go for sorya. It takes what it takes, I'd rather be slightly slower and get there alive!
