Hostel Advice for Madrid & Barcelona Spain

I'm hoping to leverage the experience of others who have backpacked Europe on a budget.

I'm wondering if there are any hidden gem or well known hostels that you would recommend in Madrid and Barcelona. I would like to stay below 50 Euro/night and stay in a place that is close to the action of the city (sights/culture through the day & night life in the evenings) as well as be clean and offer wifi in the rooms if possible. I will be staying for 3-4 nights.

Any suggestions based on past experience?

From my own experience:

In Barcelona: Hostal Central, as the name suggests it's very centrally located: close to Plaza Universidad, Plaza Catalunya and Raval/the old city. I think me and my girl paid 25 € each in the summer per night for a double room, 20 € each in january. It's really clean and especially tranquil, which I like! Other hostels in Barcelona were absolute hell; filled with drunk, obnoxious young party people. But hey, to each his own...

In Madrid I stayed in hostal Conchita II, on walking distance from the Gran Via and metro Santo Domingo, right in the very city center! The staff was really really nice; we got stuck in Madrid that time because of the Eyafyallayokul vulcano eruption, and the hostal was fully booked but they helped us out with a cheap room in the Gran Via and a couple of days later in hostal Conchita I. Again: nice people, really calm, centrally located. A bit cheaper than our Barcelona hostal.

Have fun in Barna & Madrid, both great cities!

Nice location and reasonable prices in Barcelona:

Also, understand that there is a difference between a hostel (with an e) and a hostal (with an a) in Spain:
