Where to stay to do it all
So I have aquired a free week at a mexican resort, non-all-inclusive. This is not normally the path I follow when travelling, but how can I turn up free accommodations!! Anyways, the resort chain has availability in only certain areas: San Jose del Cabo, Acapulco, Puerta Vallarta, Mazatlan, playa del carmen and puerto penasco. My question is where should we go. We have never been to Mexico, but want somewhere safe where we can spend the majority of time off the resort doing our normal things. We love the water, surfing, snorkelling, diving, and are adventurous in the sense of outdoor activities, hiking, climbing, jungling, etc, etc. Current culture not overly important, but old mayan stuff definitely an interest.
We would also like to eat away from the resort, which I know is tough to answer bc I don't know where each resort is, but an idea of food choices would be great.
Finally, and I realize I'm going to a resort, but which areas are easiest to get off the tourist track, backpacker track ok!!
Any info would be greatly appreciated for all areas.
Much thanks in advance....Vs

Oh we're going mid-july

1. Where are you flying from? Flight prices might be quite different to each of these locations.2.. If you want Mayan ruins, then you can eliminate 6 of the 7 choices.
3. July is not going to be the nicest weather anywhere. I guess that's why it's a giveaway.
4. Puerto Penasco is by far the least interesting/attractive of those choices. Especially in July-gaaaackk.
5. Acapulco or PV seem the most interesting. PCD is the only place you would be anywhere near Mayan ruins.
Acapulco vs PDC for me.

... old mayan stuff definitely an interest. In that case, choose Playa del Carmen; it's the only place close to Mayan archeological ruins. But forget the surfing (west coast is better) and climbing (no mountains on the Yucatan peninsula).

kahua: Flights are irrelevant, just wanting information on the actual areas. Its not a giveaway, thats just the time I can manage to goRobert: place is not a scam or timeshare, just looking for actual ground level information on the areas I specified
anybody know anything about the underwater life in these areas?

I think Playa del Carmen will suit your interests. You will not only have easy access to the Mayan ruins, but also to SCUBA diving and snorkeling, which is best in the Caribbean.6
Another vote here for Playa del Carmen as from there you will be able to do all your beach/dive things plus have easy access to many Mayan ruins. Photos see my website wolfcalls.com. You will also have a great range of places to dine.
