From DF to Palenque, how?

I will be in DF next May. I'd like to know how to travel from DF to Palenque. I saw there are no more flights to there. I found a bus from Mexipo TAPO (how many departure stations!) at 6.10 pm, 13 hours long. I'd prefer to leave in the morning, or at night, to arrive in a more easy hour there, but I cannot find another service. Some ideas? (I don't drive so renting a car is impossible).
Some suggestion for accomodation in Palenque?
thanks a lot

Rather than trying to go directly from DF to Palenque, I think you might find better connections by going DF to Villahermosa, Tabasco, and getting a bus to Palenque from there. It's what, maybe 1-1/2 or 2 hours from Villa to Palenque, so there should be a number of connections available.

There's lot's of buses from TAPO to Villa, including an ADO Platino (luxury) at 9:00 at night, arriving at 08:00 in the mroning.

Check the Ticketbus site for ADO schedules between TAPO and Villa. I think it's website address may have changed to www.boletotal.mx

Why Palenque? And what's the rest of your itinerary?

Maybe its because they want to go to Palenque. Good choice.
Good suggestion to connect in Villahermosa. Many buses from Mexico Tapo to Villahermosa and then very frequent service for the short 2 to 2 1/2 hour trip to Palenque. One suggestion . From Villahermosa, chose one of the buses marked as ¨local¨on the ADO shedule. These are the buses originating in Villa. The ones marked ¨Paso¨ pick up in Villa, are often late and leave from another part of the terminal I prefer to avoid.

Ed_and_Fran, RobertSDF, thanks, great suggestions! =D

I think I'll do that, I chequed Villa Hermosa flights but there are not every day, anyway, if the service is so frequent, I don't care about travelling many hours,
I'll check buses to Villa Hermosa right now!

Lake_, as Robert said, Palenque... because I want to go to Palenque :)
I'll start my trip by there, visiting its ruins. I didn't ask further because my idea is asking spot by spot, to get better answers. (But I can tell you that the next step will be San Cristobal de las Casas ;)

Not the way to get the best overall answers - and I say that having participated/observed many discussions.

You're flying into the wrong city and by doing that you waste time and money .. and add wear and tear to the body. You also pass up more important/spectacular ruins in the D.F. and that area. But if you're a serious student of the Palenque period of history, heading there first would seem to make sense.

Enjoy.

Quimera, continue with your plans and see what you want when you want. I am sure when you want specific advise I am sure you will ask. Much good advice from many who are in Mexico is available here. Hope your trip is good.

Lake, I already know which places I want to visit, I'll get the info in pieces, not just in one post altogether, that's my intention.
I'll be in Mexico 20 days. I'll fly into DF because is where I got the less expensive ticket. The 4 last days I will be back in DF (or surrounding areas, base in DF). Be sure I know Teotihuacan ruins exist.
and I LOVE HISTORY even when I'm a student of any kind.
I'll start with Palenque maya ruins

so, Robert and Ed_and_Fran,

checking how to go from Villa Hermosa to Palenque, I see this (I have an old LP guide book):
  • 1st class-deluxe- ADO bus station is located in Mina 297- ADO, UNO,OCC
  • but 2nd class Cardesa Bus station is in Bastar Zozaya & Castillo
These have service to Palenque. But when you Robert says that I should take the ADO local bus, is that local bus departing from Mina 297 too? Is this the same station to where I'll arrive from DF?
thanks!

All ADO buses (including ADO-GL and ADO Platino) will operate out of the same first class bus terminal. It's been a while since I was in Villa and don't remember the address of the bus terminal, but it will be the same one that you arrive at from D.F.

Enjoy.

I didnt say different terminals. I said another part of the terminal. I am well aware all the buses operate out of the same terminal, I have been there many times.
But the local buses( I use the term because its the term ADO uses on their website) originating in Villahermosa, operate from an area in front of the terminal with its own secure waiting room. The buses not originating in Villahermosa depart from another area in the rear of the terminal with a chaotic , hot waiting room with little security. These buses are often very late and its not a nice experience.
And yes, its all the same terminal where you will arrive from DF.

And just in case you decide to fly to Villahermosa, apparently ADO operates a transfer service from the airport to Palenque using Dodge Sprinter vans (I saw these vans and asked about them in Palenque when I was there recently).

By the way, the airport in Palenque is open, I saw several aircraft using it, but I suspect these were private aircraft or charters; several posters have mentioned no scheduled flights there anymore.

Yes , the vans do operate from the airport to Palenque. I saw one departing last week while at the Palenque ADO.
