Mt. Damavand in April.

Hello,

I am planning a 23-day trip to Iran, starting mid April. My plan is to split this time more or less in half - spend around 10 days trekking/ mountaineering and the rest visiting the cities. As for some of the trekking/mountaineering, I would like to summit Mt. Damavand from the south side.

A few questions here (assuming it is mid April):

1. What, usually, are the snow conditions? I would prefer not to take crampons/ice axe, as I'd like to reduce backpack weight/size.
2. Will the huts in Polour (C1) and near Bargah e Sevom (C3) be open?
3. Is it going to be possible to buy food/water in any of the camps?
4. Is it safe to leave your stuff in C3 during the summit day? I would prefer to summit with a daypack only.

Basically my questions burn down to whether I really (really) need to carry a tent, stove, crampons/ice axe and food. I would prefer to take a mat, sleeping bag, bivvy bag and water filter only.

As an end note - I am an experienced mountaineer and climber, with both Alpine and Himalayan background, so I am well aware of the need to acclimatise and other caveats.

thanks,
Miro.

Hi Miro,

1- You better take your crampons with you, in case you may need it.
2- C1 hut is open, but not sure about C3, it depends to your timing. At C1 you can get the latest news about C3 hut. ( C3 refuge/shelter is open).
3- Yes, you can fine at C1, and also at C3 (if open).
4- Yes.

One more thing!
As you have mentioned, you are an experienced mountaineer, but I woul like to remind that climbing Mt Damavand in April could be very tough mainly because the weather is not stable in that period.

I suggest bring your equipment.Crampton is nessesery. If camp 3 would be open ,you don't need tent.Food is not sold in camp 3 .you should cook your food.
There are some donkeies take your stuff to camp 3 for $25.You can stay in camp 3 one night and next day put your stuff in camp 3 and go to summit ,it takes about 9 hours.
tel 01223242801-4 is Polour camp for climber.
tel 09123068011 Mostafa larigani is a person can take your stuff to camp 3 by donkey .When you arrive in Iran ask a person call to Mostafa. He can give you some information.

I suggest you go in Thursday so you won't be alone.
Good luck
