Chill out spot near Hanoi.
Hi there.We're arriving in Hanoi at the end of March, and waiting for friends to arrive about ten days later. We're looking for a good place to mostly relax until they arrive. I know we could do Sapa or Ha Long Bay, but for sure our friends want to do that, so we don't really want to do it twice. So far I have considered Cat Ba Island (we could do it twice if it's worth it) or also split between Ninh Binh and Sam Son Beach. Any other suggestions? Ideally a beach would be near by and it would be as cheap as possible (and quite close to Hanoi). Appreciate your time!

When I saw Sam Son beach two years ago I thought it was pretty horrible, with lots of rubbish. Ninh Binh is certainly worth at least 3 days. You could also go north to Cao Bang or Ha Giang (no beach though) or spend a few days at a beach on Cat Ba island. There's also plenty to do in Hanoi that is off the tourist trail.3
Sam Son Beach is very dirty. I recommend Ninh Binh / Cat Ba Island. But i prefer Cat Ba. There are two wayS to go there:1. From Hai Phong Harbor take speed boat to Cat Ba
2. Explore Halong Bay then Cat Ba (overnight on boat)
For hotel, there are many hotel there, but Sun Rise resort is the best, small beach side but private and very clean
