Use a meter taxi all the way or take tuktuk or meter taxi to sapan thaksin for the riverboat.
It's hard to find a meter taxi around the grand palace, walk a few blocks away.

Maybe 10 minutes to Chinatown in a tuk-tuk or taxi, 15 to the Grand Palace. But like Tuub says, getting the taxi boat from Saphin Taksin bridge, although not as quick, is all part of the Bangkok experience.
