Long Term Stay
Hi,we (a couple) are thinking of spending 3 or 4 months in Sri Lanka so we would be looking for a long term rental in either the south-west or east coast. We are aware of the differing seasons. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has already experienced this type of stay. If anyone has other suggestions within Asia that would be suitable, I would welcome their input also (with prices etc). We have travelled extensively & have spent a # of years in Asia, Africa & South America etc already, but not in the last 8 years.
Finally, if anyone has travelled along the coast north of Colombo, I would be interested to hear about that also, as it is an area that gets little attention.
Thanks,
Mike

Just to answer your last question, I've travelled up the coast from Negombo as far as Puttalam and the word I would use would be 'interesting' rather than beautiful.Cast any thoughts of tropical island paradises from your mind. This is a workaday coast of fishing villages with the inevitable crap on the beach and lots of stretches of prawn hatcheries in ugly concrete bunkers. There is the odd resort where the beaches are raked clean, but overall it's industry and commerce amid the palm trees. The area has a Christian / Hindu culture quite different from the south of the country.
Not been along to Kalpitiya, but I've been told it has a very different, end-of-the-earth feel, again very different from the southern coast of Sri Lanka.

There are various apartments/flats and houses springing up all down the South/West coast for longer term rental. The prices vary depending on what facilities the house has. Generall for a foreign built house around 30,000 rupees a month, a lot less if you live in a Sri Lanken style house which generally would not have running water or inside kitchen. There is a lot to choose from, just travel around and find out where you want to be then ask the local shop keeper, tuktuk driver etc.
