How should New Yorkers dress in Cape Town?

Coming to Cape Town March 1 for 9 days. We are a middle-aged couple who tend to wear cargo shorts and a t-shirt (me) and black capri length pants with a black t-shirt (her) in the summer in NYC. We're not fashion plates but don't want to look like ugly Americans visible from a block away--what to wear to be comfortable in the weather and more or less fit in?? Thanks!

You sound pretty much like a South African tourist to me!

We dressed the way we do in New York (similar to you) and we were fine. The thing is, we were there in December and the weather was really variable. More so than in a NY summer. So there could be days where cargo shorts would not be warm enough. Also, things get chilly at night.

March will be lovely & warm, shorts & t-shirts all day long, better if plain colours, cargo will stick out, black clothes do make you even hotter & when there's the 'berg' wind even hotter still, casual is accepted/expected nearly everywhere, true about chilly nights.

Haha! those descriptions already sound like your 'typical American' tourist. If you want to blend in (why? your accent will give you away anyways), the lady can go for skirts and lovely summer dresses :)

We may have a language barrier here, because cargo does not have anything to do with the color of the clothes, for us in the US. Did you interpret that as camouflage? Cargo shorts/pants here are normally plain colors. They're called cargo when they have extra pockets/loops. Here is an example.

Thanks for that DianaHaddad, yes there is 'mixed wires' here as I thought cargo was camouflage, sorry !

Will blend in nicely, have a great time.

Go as you are! South Africans are very accommodating, and there are loads of people wearing loads of different styles in CT, so you'll probably fit in well.

I live in cape town.
You will be perfectly happy dressed like that. Its good advice to pack light weight cardigans or jackeys as things get chilly once the sun sets and weather can vary. Your only faux pas would be any kind of cammo; any safari style wear or gym-style trainers - and "loud" Hawaiian tyle shirts.
