Where to fly from Montana, US to Patagonia

Hi i'm planning a trip to patagonia this December for three weeks and i'm wondering where to fly in to. Ultimately we're going to end up in Ushuaia. I'm assuming either Santiago or Buenos Aires are the two main options. It seems as though Santiago has more options for transportation and a more scenic route south but I may be mistaken. Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

More scenic route(s) south, yes. More scenic all the way around, in fact. Easy country to manage, with good infrastructure and services. But.....how are you getting back? Most people traveling overland take eastern routes one direction and western routes the other.

It really doesn't make such a big difference, as said by #1 you'll be either going south and flying back or flying first and going north. Of course you should move along the Andes, most of Argentinian pampas are flat and boring. If you intend to travel both ways overland fly to Santiago.
You may cross the border severeal times from Chile to Argentina and back in places like lake district, or El Calafate / Torres del Paine.

I traveled from South Carolina all the way to Ushuaia in December 2011. It was the best time of my life. My cousin and I traveled to Santiago, Chile then took an overnight bus to Puerto Montt (Patagonia) take the tour from Puerto Montt to Bariloche and back. Then took a flight from Puerto Montt to Puerto Natales (you must visit Torres del Paine and El Calafate...there are a lot of travel agencies in Puerto Natales) then from Puerto Natales took a 11 hour bus ride to Ushuaia, lots and lots of breath taking sightseeings. Finally we took a flight from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires.

emailme if you need help or have any questions!!!

If you have a choice and depending on your route,, always fly in and out of Santiago, rather than the BA airports (chaos). Sky airlines from Santiago are cheap for domestic flights (for SA).

We're thinking about landing is Santiago and trekking down to Ushuaia and then flying back to Santiago. Ursocv Is there a reason why you flew back to Buenos Aires over Santiago? I think we're going to try to stay in Chile as much as possible from the sound of it. Also, we're trying to figure out how many hikes we can do. I'd really like to do Villarrica, Torres Del Paine (most likely W due to time), Fitz Roy, hopefully a hike near Perito Moreno, and then a couple day hike in Ushuaia. Is it unreasonable to try to budget my time to fit everything in or should I spend more time in one area? Thanks again for your responses.

Your best option is to fly in BA, take a flight to Ushuaia and then make your way up north by buses. You could fly out Santiago or BA. Most spèctacular place is southern Patagonia. from El Chalten you can make up your way all along the carretera Austral till Chiloe or cross over to Esquel
