Oberammagua area

My Husband and I will be in Oberammagua on business in mid-July, we will have a few extra days at the end of our trip and would like to make the most of it. I am hoping for suggestions of towns in the area to visit and spend a little time in- I have always wanted to take in the scenery of Austria and Switzerland, especially the Alps and am hoping we are near enough to make this happen. This is our first time to Central Europe so we are learning.
We are wanting to relax in smaller, quaint towns and take in the scenery, food and local culture. The more we can avoid 'touristy' areas the better. We are fairly active and are into hiking (mostly interested in day hikes, will not have the supplies with us for anything more intense) and photography. We will be travelling by train or bus.
Any suggestions? If you had a couple days to spend in this area where would you go? Thank you

I assume that you will be in Oberammergau, and that you will be there in July. That is probably a peak 'tourist' season in the area, and the area itself is one of the most visited in Germany. Your ability to avoid 'touristy' areas will be severely tested. Additionally, the area is quite some distance from Switzerland.
That said, you will be in the Ammergauer Alpen region with the Bavarian and Austrian Alps forming the backdrop. Access to day hiking areas will be easy at a multitude of points, but a car would make such access much more convenient.
If I had two days in the area, I would:
(a) base myself at Bad Tolz (which ranks high on the 'quaintness' scale).
(b) seek advice from locals there about appropriate hikes.
(c) go to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and take the cablecar up to the summit of the Zugspitte for a sensational view of the Austrian and Bavarian Alps.

P.S. Don't stay in Garmisch-Partenkirchen: I found it to be remarkably short on 'quaintness'!

Thanks for the tips...I thought I had Oberammergau spelled correctly, wish I could edit it! Have to be more careful. I know it will be difficult to avoid the 'touristy areas' completely but will try to do what I can. Maybe we can rent a car for a few days just to access those areas.
