I am visiting friends in Ottawa in October - we are planning a few days with them then moving on to Toronto for a few days. We are hoping to go from Toronto down into New York for a few days at the end of the trip.
I was just wondering if anyone has any tips on the most cost effective way of making that leg of the journey. There will be 5 of us - Im not sure if car hire is an option? Crossing into the States etc. The length of drive isnt an issue but not sure if buses/trains might be cheaper?
Any pointers would be welcomed.

3Family members have travelled Toronto to Montreal with megabus and they were quite impressed. The buses have free wifi on board and there are often seat sales if you book well in advance.
You could also bus to Buffalo and take the The Amtrak train from Buffalo to NYC. http://tickets.amtrak.com/itd/amtrak
If you choose to rent a car be aware that driving in NYC is not for the faint of heart and parking is expensive.
