safari recommendation
Hi,I'm currently in Mombassa Kenya and now planning on heading into Tanzania, which I didn't plan on and so dont have a guidebook - I'll head to zanzibar first (possible to get a guidebook there?).
I'd like to organize a safari to ngorongoro crater and/or the serengeti. In Kenya I did a 6 day safari with gametrackers who I would recommend - and there are plenty of positive reviews in the thorn tree kenya forum. They are basically a budget operation - you camp in public campsites and are pretty cheap. But you travel in 4x4 - not a minibus - and the cook and guide were excellent.
I'm looking for a similar type of operation in tanzania - the 6 day safari in kenya with game drives each day (Amboseli, Tsavo east and west) cost $800 and something - I think 840. I dont mind paying more, but liked the mix of 4x4 and basic camping.

Lots of people have great things to say about Basecamp out of Arusha... we haven't used them but Achmed seems to be a big favorite of folks doing budget camping safaris. Not sure how you are planning to get to Zanzibar... but from there to Arusha you are going to have the choice of an all-day bus ride from Dar to Arusha or a more expensive but much less hassle internal flight connection. If you do the bus, make sure you get a good, air-conditioned express bus with one of the recommended companies.
