1) Day train Salzburg - Zagreb and then night train Zagreb to Sarajevo arriving 800 or so.. (however given recent posts on night train robberies and lack of sleeper cars in current situation - probably not a good option unless new trains come online before next June). If we did this, thought is to spend the day with tour guide probably (don't think our large group could effectively travel around city and accomplish much in 1 day) seeing highlights of Sarajevo and then evening train to Mostar. We would stay in Mostar for 2 nights before travelling on via bus to Dubrovnik.
2) Night train from Munich to Budapest and day train on to Sarajevo arriving about 1800 hrs. Spend night one in Sarajevo and following day and night. Then leave following morning on train to Mostar and spend day touring. Spend night in Mostar and leave following mid- day for Dubrovnik. Downside here is schlepping from one hotel to another... after being on a LONG train trip.
3) Same as #2 above - but just get on next train from Sarajevo to Mostar when we arrive -- skip Sarajevo and go straight to Mostar.
Are all three options crazy or any make more sense than others? If it was just myself and husband.. no issues.. but with our whole family.. don't want to miss the point of our quick visit to Bosnia!!

1I've just sent private message to you with recommendations of licensed tourist guides in Sarajevo and in Mostar. You can contact them to do tailoring your visit/sightseeing of Sarajevo and Mostar.
Yes, that is true, there are some robberies at the trains from Zagreb and I recommend to take bus from Zagreb if you are coming via Zagreb.
Zagreb - Sarajevo - One way ticket: 50 KM=25€
Two way ticket: 80 KM=40€
Departure, every day from Zg 22:00 (Arrival to Sarajevo: 06:00)
KM = Konvertibile Mark = Bosnian money (1€ = 2KM)

2thanks for the info.. i did receive the guide info. i don't think a bus is feasible for our group.. so maybe a day train from zagreb is better to Sarajevo. Do you think stopping one night in Sarajevo.. one day and then on to Mostar for one night and one day or possibly better to just bypass sarajevo and go straight to mostar for 2nights with our large family??

3Have you considered the possibility of a car or minivan rental? Given the number of people it might offer some flexibility that other options don't. If so, then travel to Zagreb and picking up a car there to drop off in Dubrovnik makes the most sense.
Personally I would spend two nights in Sarajevo and one in Mostar before reaching Dubrovnik. The big attraction in Mostar is the bridge and the old part of the city nearby. It simply doesn't take that long to see.

5It's much better to spend more time in Sarajevo. There is Bascarsija (old town), museums, shopping centers, parks, spring of the river Bosna (very attractive place).
On the other side in Mostar you have only Old bridge with a old part of the town. But if you visit Mostar you have to go to the spring of river Buna - biggest spring of fresh water in Europe - and it's just 12 kilometers away from Mostar.
After all renting a van is a great option for tourists who like to change towns. If you have a van you can stay in Sarajevo and make a one day long trip to Mostar and go back. Distance between Sarajevo and Mostar is just 120-130 kilometers.
