2book at the station yourself the day before you want to travel to Mombasa and save yourself a lot of money.
Don't forget that the late afternoon traffic in Nairobi will be an absolute nightmare, so make sure you allow plenty of time for getting to the station. I would usually take all my luggage down in the early afternoon and put it in the left luggage office for a small charge, then walk into town for shopping/something to eat and get back to the station about an hour before departure of your train.

3My problem is that I probably don't have time to go in myself. My flight arrives at 20.00 then I'm headin on safari the very next morning. I plan on doing the night train on the day I come back from the safari. Is it too last minute to book the day of?
What are the train station hours? Maybe I can go late in the evening or super early in the morning before going on the safari?

sorry, the ticket office won't be open early in the morning or in the evening. They keep office hours and also take a 2 hour lunch break from 12.00 noon! There shouldn't be a problem with booking on the day you want to travel, but if you want to be sure, it sounds like you may have to book it online after all.
By the way, have you checked the schedule to make sure that the train runs on that day?
